Academy Award®-winning actress, breast and ovarian cancer survivor Kathy Bates spoke to record crowd at the H.O.W. Time is of the Essence Luncheon

January 29, 2018 – Palm Beach, Florida - H.O.W (Hearing the Ovarian Cancer Whisper) welcomed nearly 330 supporters to the Mar-a-Lago Club on Monday, January 26 for its annual Time is of the Essence luncheon featuring Academy Award®-winning actress Kathy Bates.  

HOW President Fern Fodiman commented "Kathy Bates was an extraordinary speaker.  She gave a heartfelt speech about her battle with cancer and delivered it with poise, humor and honesty.  There were many messages to walk away with but one that stood out was 'no matter what adversity we face in life try to find a piece of happiness in each and every day and embrace it'.  She truly moved everyone in the room.”

Bates successfully battled ovarian cancer since her diagnosis in 2003. In September 2012, she revealed via Twitter that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer two months earlier and had undergone a double mastectomy. 

Luncheon guests also heard remarks from both Amanda Abrams, a local ovarian cancer survivor and patient advocate who has received assistance from H.O.W. through the Jacquie Liggett Angel Fund and Dr. Robert C. Knapp, Chairman of the H.O.W. Medical Advisory Board and the co-inventor of the blood test for ovarian cancer, CA125.

Andrea Stark and Judy Snyder served as event chairwomen. Major event sponsors included Betsy K. H.O.W (Hearing the Ovarian Cancer Whisper), was founded by the late Jacquie Liggett of Palm Beach and is a nonprofit organization that supports research in ovarian cancer by funding the Jacquie Liggett Fellowship; helps women with ovarian cancer in financial need through the Jacquie Liggett Angel Fund; presents educational programs about ovarian cancer and provides support to medical students interested in a career in gynecologic oncology through the Robert C. Knapp Medical Student Award.
