2017 Time is of the Essence Luncheon


H.O.W. - Hearing the Ovarian Cancer Whisper hosted the 16th Annual Time is of the Essence Luncheon on Thursday, January 26, 2017 at The Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach. Celebrity guest speakeres were award-winning theatre, film and television actress, Laura Linney, and board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist, author and ABC medical correspondent, Dr. Jennifer Ashton.  Andrea Stark, Judy Snyder and Valerie Goldfein served as chairwomen, with Fern Fodiman as honorary chairwoman.

Linney shared her advocacy work for cancer research, anecdotes from when her mother was a nurse at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, discussed her series the 'Big C' on Showtime, and stressed the important role nurses play in care giving.

Dr. Ashton discussed signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer, prevention, and overall women's health.

Chairwoman Valerie Goldfein, ovarian cancer survivor, bravely told her story from diagnosis to remittance. 

Angel Fund recipient Jen Brown shared the exciting news that she is now one year cancer-free and thanked attendees for their generosity toward women like her. 

All proceeds from this event benefitted H.O.W. 

The 17th Annual Time is of the Essence Luncheon will be held on Friday, January 26th, 2018 at The Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach. 

Laura Linney

Laura Linney is an American actress, a three-time Academy Award nominee and three-time Tony Award nominee. She made her Hollywood breakthrough in 1998, playing Jim Carrey’s on-screen wife in The Truman Show, for which she received critical acclaim. Laura was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in the 2000 film You Can Count on Me.   

 She won her first Emmy Award in 2002 for Wild Iris, and had subsequent wins for Frasier and John Adams. She starred in the Showtime series The Big C, which won her a fourth Emmy in 2013. She is also a two-time Golden Globe Award winner. Laura made her Broadway debut in 1990, before going on to receive Tony Award nominations for the 2002 revival of The Crucible and the original Broadway productions of Sight Unseen and Time Stands Still.   

Dr. Jennifer Ashton

Dr. Jennifer Ashton is a Board-certified Ob-Gyn, and is also Board-Certified in Obesity Medicine.  She is a graduate of Columbia College, Columbia University.  She then received her medical degree from Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons, where she was elected Class President for four consecutive years.  Upon graduation, she was awarded the prestigious Bartlestone Award in Pharmacology.  Dr. Ashton received her post-graduate training in women’s health and surgery at St.Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center in NYC, an affiliate of Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons.  She served as Administrative Chief Resident and was awarded Chief Resident of the Year upon completing her residency. She received a Master’s of Science Degree in Nutrition from the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons Institute of Human Nutrition in 2016, making Dr. Ashton one of the only M.D.'s with a national media platform who also has a degree in Nutrition.

Dr. Ashton is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.  She has presented abstracts and posters at national clinical meetings in the fields of General Surgery, Critical Care and Gynecologic Oncology.  Dr. Ashton is on the Attending staff of Englewood Hospital and Medical Center in Englewood, NJ, an affiliate of Mt. Sinai School of Medicine.  One of the few physicians with media platforms who still sees patients, she has an active medical practice, where she treats women of all ages for medical and surgical gynecologic conditions, and manages primary care issues such as Depression, skin issues and Obesity. 

Dr. Ashton is the Chief Women’s Health Correspondent for ABC News. In 2016, Dr Ashton became the Chief Women’s Health Contributor for the Dr Oz show.  In 2013: CBS Paramount Television announced that Dr. Ashton had been signed as a new co-host of the nationally syndicated, Emmy award-winning daytime medical tv show, The Doctors.  Since 2012, she has also been the Senior Medical Contributor for Good Morning America and World News Tonight, ABC News.   From 2009-2011, Dr. Ashton was the Medical Correspondent for CBS News Network and was seen daily on The Early Show and regularly on The CBS Evening News with Katie Couric.  Dr. Ashton received the prestigious Columbia Alfred DuPont Award for Excellence in Journalism for her work on CBS.  Dr Ashton is the author of 3 books: Eat This Not That When Expecting, her award-winning book, The Body Scoop for Girls, is a relatable guidebook for teenage health, while, Your Body Beautiful, is a new-age head to toe guide to vitality and wellness for women age 30 and over.  Dr. Ashton is also the author of the monthly feature column, "Ask Dr. Ashton", in Cosmopolitan Magazine. 

In January, 2010, Dr. Ashton travelled to Haiti with a medical team where she treated victims of the earthquake for 8 days. 

Dr. Ashton is the country’s leading voice of Women’s Health, as the only Board-certified Ob-Gyn with two national media platforms.  She is a frequent Keynote Speaker and Moderator for National events regarding Health and Wellness.  She is committed to improving the lives of girls and women through increasing health literacy and busting myths that have been propagated via folklore without any medical or scientific basis.  She has a ‘girlfriend’s’ approachable demeanor with Ivy League credentials that combine to make her the definitive voice for Women’s Health in the modern age.  As a mom of 2 teenagers, Dr. Ashton not only ‘talks the talk’ but ‘walks the walk’, proving that commitment to good nutrition, fitness, sleep and stress reduction are the cornerstones to health and wellness.  With her MD, and credentials in Nutrition, along with her accomplishments as a triathlete, cyclist and fitness enthusiast, Dr. Ashton is as comfortable discussing the latest workout or diet trend, as she is counseling on cancer screening or reproductive health issues facing women.
